My site doesn't appear anywhere at all in a google search- but it is there!

If you’ve just set up the page it’s very usual that google needs some time. That could be up to some weeks. In any case, you can use this google webmaster tool to let google know your site exists, so they can crawl the URL and put your sites into their Index:
