Trying to de-clutter navigation menu using parent/children pages

Can anyone assist me in accomplishing this goal on my self hosted site? I am using the new WordPress v. 3.3

I have a series of web pages and I want to control what pages appear in the horizontal navigation menu bar just below my page header. Here is a current screen shot of the page for a visual reference.

On my HOME page, I would like the tan navigation bar to display: “Home, Blog, About, and Links” and leave off all of the others.

On the ABOUT page, I would like the tan navigation bar to display “Home, My Story, Our Story, No Coincidences, Genealogy, Words of Wisdom, Rusty’s Recent Ramblings, and Old Photos” (all of these pages other than HOME are already designated as children of “ABOUT”.

On the LINKS page, I would like the tan navigation bar to display “Home, Americana, Art & Music, Catholic & Spiritual, Friends, Fun & Games, Get Paid, Miscellany, Nostalgia, Ohio & Almni” — again all already children of “LINKS”

I added the plugin called “Subpage Listing” which is what generated the bullet itemed link list in the screen shot.

Is there an easy way or another plugin to accomplish my goal of a less cluttered navigation bar by only viewing the immediate children of each respective page and not the cousins or nieces/nephews? Or do I need to delve deeply into the coding?

If it makes a difference, I am quite flexible to using other theme designs. I just selected the one in the screen shot in my early layout phase but am not tied to it.
