Help: Multisite only allowing certain subdomains to work

  • Hi,

    I have installed multisite to my site – https://www.fcsupporters.com.

    However when I add a site (subdomain) to wp via the wp admin area if it is one that I had previously created when I wasnt using multisite via my hosting control panel then it comes up with this error – Internal Server Error

    The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

    Please contact the server administrator, [email protected] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

    More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
    Apache/2 Server at arsenal.fcsupporters.com Port 80.

    When I create a site (subdomain) that I havnt previously used or set up in the hosting control panel then it works fine for example – hyde.fcsupporters.com is one that I havnt used or set up before in the hosting control panel so it work.

    I have deleted all the subdomains out of the hosting control panel and am still getting the error.

    It takes a little time for subdomains to propogate on some servers. Shouldn’t, but …

    Did you set up wildcard subdomains?

    Hi,

    There are no sub domains set up in the hosting contol panel subdomains.

    I think it was already set up, but I’ve checked and there is a * in the dns settings.

    The subdomains that I’ve never used before they work eg Hyde.fcsupporters.com will work, whereas arsenal.fcsuppprters.com won’t work as Ive previously used it as a sub domain a few weeks ago, even though all subdomains are deleted I still can’t use them as it comes up with 500 error.

    Okay, if you have CPANEL you need to set up the subdomains in the hosting panel as well as DNS ?? DNS tells the rest of the world ‘anything.mydomain.com is a part of mydomain.com.’ The cpanel stuff tells your server ‘Oh and this is how I handle that…’ ??

    Make a subdomain called * and point it NOT to it’s own folder, but the public_html one, where WP is installed ?? That’ll work for cPanel. If you’re using plesk it’s a bit different.

    I already had the * created in the DNS settings.

    I dont know what has happened here.

    But it is still coming up with 500 error.

    Re-read what I said, please. You have to set up the subdomain on your hosting panel to have a subdomain named *

    What hosting panel does your webhost use? Cpanel? Plesk?

    I’m not talkin’ about DNS, you did that just fine ?? There’s another place you have to set this up.

    I can’t create the * sub domain it comes up with this – The domain name you entered looks invalid. Please try another.

    Can I give you my login details for my cp so you can have a look?

    Warning! Wildcard DNS may not be configured correctly!

    The installer attempted to contact a random hostname (5429e7.www.fcsupporters.com) on your domain.

    To use a subdomain configuration, you must have a wildcard entry in your DNS. This usually means adding a * hostname record pointing at your web server in your DNS configuration tool.

    You can still use your site but any subdomain you create may not be accessible. If you know your DNS is correct, ignore this message.

    So how do I set this up exactly?

    Only if you’re hiring me.

    Ask your webhost how to setup wildcard subdomains. Alternately, manually make a subdomain and map it to the main WP install (NOT it’s own subfolder).

    how do i map it? I have the * in the sub domain box, what do I put in the next box?

    I’ve never used eXtend control panel and I have no idea what their setup looks like, but, on cpanel you point it to /home/sites/fcsupporters.com/public_html/

    That’s it, no extra subfolders.

    If you use a named subdomain (i.e. foobar) then you STILL point that to /home/sites/fcsupporters.com/public_html/

    I don’t know if extend lets you do this, which is why I suggested asking your host. You know, the people you already pay? ??
