• I installed wordpress on my site and when I’m trying to install the theme with root node ip as hostname, root username and password. It shows the error I provided in the subject. I’ve also tried using localhost as the hostname but it’s not working. I’ve hosted it on https://www.linode.com

Could anyone help me to resolve this?

    Thank you.

  • Are you trying to upload theme using FTP or from WordPress admin ?

Can you first confirm that you can FTP to that server outside of WordPress using an FTP client?

If your server isn’t running FTP then you’ll get that error message.

I’m successfully transferring the files through ftp client(filezilla).

I’ve done it with directly transferring the downloaded theme to wp-content/themes by filezilla. But it is easy, if I’ve installed it through control panel. Could you suggest the solution for that?

I’m (fairly) convinced it’s just a file and directory issue and not really an FTP issue.

You’re on a VPS so it’s your box and you have root access. Are you running Ubuntu? If so, for theme updates to work in WordPress, the files and directories need to be owned by www-data. That’s what the Ubuntu Apache web server package defaults to as a uid/gid.

If you are running Ubuntu, can you confirm that’s the owner of those files and directories?
