• Hi all,

I am just getting a WP site started (leftwichlessons.com), and having a lot of trouble uploading any media i.e either directly through the media>add new or the Appearance>Header>Upload. I can access the site directory through filezilla, and can manually put images into the default: /web/uploads, but I can’t upload it through the dashboard directly, when I do I get the error message:

Unable to create directory /home/vg001web03/41/48/2934841/leftwichlessons/web/web/uploads/2012/01. Is its parent directory writable by the server?

I’ve been in touch with host and they say I should have permissions. I’ve tried creating the directory in question uploads/2012/01 but that doesn’t seem to help, than I just get an error message where it appends the new file path.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated,
    David

  • I’m having the same problem with a fresh manual install of 3.31, I can’t upload new images through the dashboard and I’ve got that problem with the visual editor too.

I’ve been trying the ‘fixes’ suggested by others but nothings working yet.

I’ve just done an install of wp2.9 and that all works fine. What’s wrong with 3.31 straight out of the zip?

Thanks for your thoughts orchardcraigo, glad to know that at least rolling back works, could you link to the fixes you tried? Thanks!

Unable to create directory means that you need to change the permission of the directory to let the web server write to that directory. If you can log into your webserver the command is chmod 777 home/vg001web03/41/48/2934841/leftwichlessons/web/web/uploads/

If not, find the upload directory in your web host control pannel and look for a way to change the permissions so the owner, group, and user can read/write/execute the uploads directory.
