I have a hosted site which is running fine but I need to find a way of moving a copy of that site down to my local machine. I have tried various methods up to and including using a full back-up copy of both web folders and mySql database. When moved onto local machine, the .sql backup has been imported into the local mysql database with no problems and the entries for siteurl and home changed to reflect the new location. I have also edited the wp-config.php.

Now, when I try and log-in to my local copy, it loads but it looks nothing like the web based copy. The items that should be on the menu are not there and I am left with a pageful of hyperlinks , which, if clicked, do nothing.

    Any ideas?

    Mike

  • Hi Mike

I use the the Backup Buddy Plugin (no I don’t work for them just a user !)

Certainly can recommend it and it’s worth the cost if you do very much WordPress work at all. It makes this whole process of moving sites _really_ easy.

You can check it out here https://pluginbuddy.com/purchase/backupbuddy/

Problem resolved. I have discovered a reasonably straightforward method of moving a site from live to local dev / test server. Takes no more than 10 minutes.

I will write down the steps and post later.

    Please tell this method? Thanks

Hadn’t realised that I had not made good my promise to post the method. Having moved hosting company a couple of months back, I need to refresh my local installation anyway. AS the weather is just to nice to be inside, I’ll do this later this evening to refresh my memory and post the method tomorrow.
