wordpress site extremely slow

I have recently downloaded yslow and tested out my site, its horribly slow. There are a lot of categories with “F”s in them and fear that this is hurting my search engine position and most definately the user experience. I have been told I should go with a semi-dedicated server…but its not even that big of a website. I think its overkill and just dancing around the real problems. One of which yslow says im “This page has 14 external Javascript scripts. Try combining them into one.” Problem is that i dont know how to do that. Any point in the right direction would be helpful! Thank you!
