• Hi,

I had a parse/syntax error and got some great help here.
The problem is now i can log in to my wordpress but my page is completely blank.

Can i revert back to a previous point to restore the site? or is there something i have to do to regarding my hosting to get it back?

    Thanks

  • What did you change? Your theme?

If so, what happens if you change to a different theme. Assuming things work in a different theme, reinstalling your broken theme might work, although it would overwrite any changes you’ve made to that theme, which is why Child Themes are the only recommended way of modifying a theme.

If you decide to reinstall your theme, remember to activate a different theme first.

    Hi,

    Thanks for replying.
I changed the name of my theme in my hosting folder in 123 reg.

I know what i did to cause the problem, I changed the raw fuctions php, but i don’t know how to revert back to that point for the whole site.

You can not change the name of theme folder as if that theme is is active theme that name is saved in database.
Since toy g=have the wrong name for theme your default theme should have opened. What theme did you rename.

Can you get to Dashboard? Or is that your problem? If you can get to the Dashboard, the best thing to do to start with would be to revert to one of the default themes.

If you can’t get to your Dashboard, you could try downloading the theme to your local machine, unzipping it and then uploading the theme’s functions.php file (rename the current one first so you don’t completely overwrite it) to the theme’s directory.

i think i know what the problem is, in my hosting i had to change the name of the theme to force it to work to xsideways instead of sideways, when i go into my themes in wordpress is says that the information is located in the xsideways file, but that has now reverted back to sideways (in the hosting).

How can i change the folder in the theme of wordpress back to just sideways?

    AGGGGRRRR,

So frustrating, so i am getting there but none of my pages are showing up… the theme is there but not the content. Any ideas?

Use your favourite FTP client to navigate to the themes directory on your WP site and do the business.

But do bear in mind what govpatel says. He’s right. Messing with these things can be dangerous.

Thanks but i dont even know what my ftp client is… and what business do i do???
Like i said the theme is working but none of the content is, i just want to revert it back, there must be a way rather than keep messing with things i dont understand…

I’m a visual person i dont understand the script side of wp.

An FTP client is what you use to load to and from your web site. You can also use it to change file and directory names. To change the contents of a file, you can download it, change the contents locally and then upload the edited file.

But I think the answer is to use whatever you used to change the theme name in the first place, to change it back. BTW, when you say you changed the theme name, do you mean you changed it in the theme’s comment block inside its style.css file, or do you mean you changed the name of the file?

And why have we moved away from the functions.php file to the name of the theme. I’m a bit lost, I’m afraid.

Basically, everything was fine, all running great apart from a tiny bit of script which linked my gallery images to a lightbox, i contacted the theme creater and he told me to change a bit of script in the functions.php.

I did this and it caused a parse syntax error, which i posted on here and i was advided to login to my host and change the name of the theme folder to force it to revert to the original settings.

When i did this i was allowed to login into wordpress which i couldn’t do previously.

Now i can login to wordpress but nothing is showing on my pages.

Basically all i want to do is revert the whole site back to how it was before i made the original change.

    Can i do that?

    What theme is currently active?

(Although, from what you say, I have to say I think it should be the theme creator who should be dealing with this, since it seems to be his/her code that started this problem)

    Cheers

    The theme is called sideways.

I know on a page i can revert to a previous saved version, can i not do that for the whole site?

    Thank you

Not that I know of. It’s a completely different thing. For a page you are talking about a database entry in a table controlled by WP. For a theme you are talking about files that are not controlled by WP.

    What theme is currently active?

I updated my raw fuctions php in the settings edit option.

    Your original problem. https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/parse-error-syntax-error-38?replies=5

login to my host and change the name of the theme folder to force it to revert to the original settings

No, that should have forced your site using the twenty ten theme. If it did not then something is wrong.

To change the name back, reverse the instructions you got here, https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/parse-error-syntax-error-38?replies=5

If you did not make any changes other then that functions.php file then just reinstall fresh copy of sideways.
