MAMP localhost pretty permalink not working

Hi, I realise this topic has been spoken about quite a bit but after months of trying I still cannot get pretty permalinks working on my mac os snow leopard wordpress install.
I have followed the following posts / suggestions doing everything from changing .htaccess permissions to adding mod write to my http.conf and restarting apache, but will no luck.
Really need some help from someone experienced in getting over this ‘hurdle’…
