Hi I’m totally confused. I have a wordpress blog at https://www.mywebsite.com and that is fine. I have another blog through the network multi site option at https://www.mywebsite.com/subblog (sub folder installation). I have a domain https://www.anothersite.com which I would like to map to the blog at https://www.mywebsite.com/subblog

I want https://www.anothersite.com to exist in the address bar permanently so when some one clicks /news for that blog the address will say https://www.anothersite.com/news and not https://www.mywebsite.com/subblog/news even though technically that’s where they would be going to.

I have followed the instructions for installing the plugin manually.

I have set up an A record with the domain host for https://www.anothersite.com to point to the correct ip address 88.999.000.345 (which is the server ip address for https://www.mywebsite.com) . For good measure I have also set up a cname record for https://www.anothersite.com to point to https://www.mywebsite.com but not sure if I needed to do that.

When I go to https://www.anothersite.com it goes to a default apache server page, instead of the previous holding page set by the domain host. SO I know my A record / Cname record has done something but not quite sure why it’s going to an Apache page.

I have set up the domain mapping in my wordpress admin for https://www.mywebsite.com/subblog and added https://www.anothersite.com.

Where it says Active domains on this blog I have two domains:
https://www.mywebsite.com/subblog
https://www.anothersite.com

The primary address is https://www.mywebsite.com/subblog. If I change this so that the primary address is https://www.anothersite.com, then I lose the website and only see the default apache page when I visit either URL.

Is anyone able to detect what I am doing wrong with my set up? Have I set my A record or cname incorrectly? Should I remove the cname. I have tried different settings with the a record and cname but it takes 48 hours for each change I make to work and so cannot seem to get it correct.

I have written detailed directions for WordPress 3.3 domain mapping on shared hosting, with a subdomain configuration. There would be some differences since you are probably maintaining your own server, and have a subfolder configuration. https://lcblog.lernerconsult.com/2012-wordpress-3-multi-site-domain-mapping/

One thing is you can Not have the WordPress domain mapped. Buy a different domain name (even random letters) for WordPress, and have your website be an add-on domain.

WordPress also must be installed in /public_html (you said you’re using Apache) for domain mapping to work.

Please post here or at my blog the specific settings you use, I want to add subfolder instructions to my domain mapping page.

I sorted it, after getting on to my server support. I had to add anothersite.com as a parked domain on to mywebsite.com account in cpanel with the manage redirection option set to mywebsite.com/subblog. This worked though I had clear browser cache / history a few timed during the process. Also my server support had to add the ip addresses of where the domain was registered at as allowable ip addresses as I got a couple of errors parking the domain.
