Early this AM I tried installing the W3 Total Cache plugin on my website. I use BlueHost and uploaded the plugin to the plugin folder and then ACTIVATED it via the admin area in WordPress 3.3.1.

Immediately my entire site including the admin are was unavailable. I tried uninstalling the plugin but that did not help.

I contacted the BlueHost help desk where they had me remove (using FTP) the installed w3-t-c folder. They also notified me that my .htaccess file had some bogus lines that needed removal.

I went about removing in addition at least three other cache related files in the root folder and finally had to reset the PERMALINKS to get things back to normal. The tech support person at BlueHost said that as a result of installing the plugin I had run into some sort of infinite looping situation.

    My question is two-fold:

    – BlueHost recommended that I use WP Super Cache instead
    – Is W3 Total Cache a better alternative than what they recommended? Has anyone else run into problems trying to install W3 Total Cache?

  • I’ll try to be as unbiased as possible. ?? One plugin isn’t “better” than the other. W3TC offers more options than WP Super Cache and is therefore also harder to setup for the average user. WP Super Cache has a simple setting and a slightly more advanced (but still easy) mod_rewrite setting. If you google around a bit you will find tons of people with problems with the W3TC – some of it’s legit and others isn’t.

Another option is Quick Cache. That’s the easiest of them all to setup! Whichever plugin you decide to use you can always post your questions to get help.

@beezodog, what are the bogus lines?

I no longer have the lines and did not copy them. I was notified about them from my web hosting technical support person. Once these lines were removed I still had to get rid of some additional files that were present.

Near as I could tell the installation of the plug-in caused some sort of “infinite loop” which was a problem. Just not certain whether anyone else has experienced this sort of thing or if it was merely a fluke.
