How many times does wordpress try to notify a new user before it bounces them?

I’m trying to write up my own little user registration information area. When I try to look this information up all I seem to get are plugins.

I’m just wondering how many attempts are made to deliver the email for it gives up. When it can’t find deliver it does it just delete the information to allow the user to try an re-register?
