• Okay, I am successfully using multisite for three subsites. I set them up at the same time a few months ago, and now am trying to add a fourth. I’ve run into an issue that sounds a bit similar to problems others have experienced, but not quite the same.

From Network Admin, I went to Sites > Add New and everything appeared to set up successfully there. I have a dashboard for the new site.

But… The page is blank at the new site (no 404 error, though), and in the new site’s dashboard, I get a warning:

“ERROR: The themes directory is either empty or doesn’t exist. Please check your installation.”

Fine, I assume I can enable from the Network dashboard. But when there, I see that all my themes are network enabled. I don’t see any way to enable for an individual site.

Obviously, my workflow is messed up somewhere. Do I need to upload files with this process? what am I missing?

  • I don’t see any way to enable for an individual site.

Go to Network Admin > Sites, Edit a site, then choose the Themes tab.

You’re only shown those themes which are not network enabled, and can enable them individually for specific site(s) to use.

Thanks, I’ve tried that. I get the message:

“You do not appear to have any themes available at this time.”

That makes sense, if you haven’t uploaded any themes which haven’t been network activated.

We need to work out what’s going on with your new site. It’s clearly not able to use the default theme which it should pick up. Can you set either of your existing sites to the default theme? That will tell us if it’s working, with directory and file protections not getting in the way.

Well, all I have available in the themes folder are custom themes. It’s not clear to me why I can’t access those themes with this site, or make them available to it from the Multisite admin.

I’m guessing WP will only generate a blank page (no HTML in source whatsoever) if no theme is available, correct?

Blank pages are actually normally PHP errors.

What themes are in your wp-content/themes folder?
