• Problem: When I point any domains A record to the IP address of my host to map to my multisite it maps to and displays one of my other wordpress installs. How do I get the domain dns or multisite to connect to the right install since they are sharing IP’s?

    Here’s the breakdown:

-Shared hosting, hostgator with dedicated IP
-I have setup the multisite with domain mapping plugin installed following all instructions on https://ottopress.com/2010/wordpress-3-0-multisite-domain-mapping-tutorial/
-I have multisite setup to use subdomains
-I have setup wildcards for subdomains according to hostgators instructions
    https://support.hostgator.com/articles/hosting-guide/lets-get-started/dns-name-servers/wildcard-dns-what-is-it-and-how-do-i-use-it
-I have pointed the domains A records to my hosts IP
-I have setup the subsite to have the primary domain set in domain mapping settings
-I also tried cname option but get same result

Maybe its better to just buy a separate host all together just for the multisite, not sure if that will solve the problem either.

I am not sure what else to try, maybe someone can help, I am even willing to pay for help instead of spending all this time trying to figure it out, if you can solve it let me know how to contact you to get it done. ??

What do you mean ‘another install’?

Do you have multiple installs on the one IP? If so, can you point the domain to the ‘master domain’ you’re trying to map to instead?

Thanks for the reply my apologies for the money talk, just wanted to get it solved, meant no harm. ??

Yes I have multiple wordpress installs on the one IP, it is a shared hosting account with multiple wordpress sites and domains.

One of which is the multisite install with domain mapping plugin. I want to point any domain to multisite install, but instead the pointed domains show one of my other wordpress sites.

Not sure how to tell a domain to go to a specific site since they are sharing IP’s.

What did you set CNAME to in the plugin? Just example.com, no http, right?

Thats correct just the domain no http.

I found this link on the same topic which has been closed but it did not solve my problem, at least I am not sure how to do the part on apache, think thats what I need to do?

Is your multisite, perchance, an add-on domain or a separate account on the same server?

    Thread Starter arillera

    (@arillera)

Its an add-on domain inside hostgator

Thanks by the way for helping with this, taking your time to help.

    Ugh.

    Okay, yeah, that’s why.

The apache trick in that other thread – https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/multiple-multisite-installs-on-single-ip?replies=28#post-1544953 – is what you need. Can you ask your host to do that? Just tell them you want to park another domain on your ADDON domain.

Ok so I’m telling them that I need to park another domain (the domain I am using the A record in go daddy ) on top of the add on domain, do I need to show them the Apache thing also or your recommendation covers that?

If every domain that gets added to multsite needs this process I am thinking a separate host and install might be best. It wouldn’t make sense to have to contact hostgator every time a user wants to point their domain a record to my multisite.

Well…. No it’s not terribly hard to do what you’re trying to do.

I did a bit of research on this as it happens for another project this weekend.

The trick here is, when you park the domain, to park it atop the add-on. Sounds easy, right? By default, any domain parked on your site will go to your ‘main’ domain, so when you park on an add-on, you have to make sure to point it at that location. This can be difficult, as not all severs give you the access to easily do that out of the box.
Thankfully, cPanel has a pretty non-intuitive way around it.

First make note of the ‘home’ directory for your add-on domain (it’s normally something like /public_html/addon.com/ ). Then go into your cPanel dashboard and add a parked domain. Just enter the domain name and press ‘Add Domain.’ This will take you a screen to select the ‘home directory.’ All you have to do is make sure you pick the one for your add-on domain, and you’re good to go.

If you don’t have cPanel, you’ll have to edit your vhosts file directly.
