how to create subnetworks w/privacy settings like FB's college networks?

hey im new to this but i was wondering if there was a way to use one buddypress and automatically put users into subnetworks based on the email address they provide and still allow them to communicate with other users on other subnetworks, almost like groups? ex. facebook automatically puts users into different college networks based on users email like “harvard.edu” but they can still connect and talk with other users in other networks once their friends. also i dont want to create different sites just for this to work. any help would be much appreciated!

and also is there a way to allow for privacy setting for users such as viewable profile for all users, users on the same network, or friends only?
