• Hi All,

I’m running wp 1.5.2 and my RSS feed is broken. I don’t know when this happened, I probably did it, but I don’t know how to fix it.

Here’s the error I get when I try to validate it:
    <?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”UTF-8″?>

    My blog is at https://www.jonwatson.ca/blog

    Any ideas what I’ve done?

    Thanks!

    Jon

There is a blank line at the top of your feed. This can be caused by either a plugin or a core WordPress file that has somehow managed to acquire an extra blank line. I recommend that you start troubleshooting by deactivating your plugins. Use this link to check your progress:

Aha! Thanks…you’re right. It’s my Chitika eMiniMall plugin. Totally crappy since that’s my big money maker, but at least I know where to start fixing.

    Thanks!

Check the Chitika eMiniMall plugin file(s) for extra blank lines either at the top or bottom of the file’s content. If you find one, then it is the cause of your trouble. Remove it, reactive the plugin, notify the plugin’s developer, and all will be well.

Grrr…nope, that’s not it. There’s no blank lines that I can see.

I’ve notified the developer, but I don’t know if I’ll hear back.

    Any other wild ideas?

    Thanks!

The original problem seems to have cleared itself up. So, whatever you did appears to have worked. The only problem now is that it is not standard to have javascript inside feeds, but that won’t break anything, and your feed is functioning just fine.

Aahh….I consolidated the code a bit (taking out blank lines) and that seems to have helped. Cool.

Now…this is a topic for another thread, but can you possibly point me in the right direction to make the ‘auto discovery’ point to my feed burner feed rather than the ?feed=rss2 that you keep getting?

    Thanks!

Actually, your auto discovery is almost completely set. The last things to do is to change the RSS 2.0 link in your left sidebar to:

    <li><a href="https://feeds.feedburner.com/jonwatson/IBuK" title="Syndicate this site using RSS"><abbr title="Really Simple Syndication">RSS</abbr> 2.0</a></li>

And, change the Valid RSS link in your left sidebar to:

    <li><a href="https://www.feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=https://feeds.feedburner.com/jonwatson/IBuK" title="This feed validates as RSS.">Valid RSS</a></li>

OK, thanks – I forgot about those links.

I think I’ve done all the right stuff – I’ve changed all the links in the header RSS lines to point to feedburner and I even have the feedburner plugin going, but when I try to sub to my site using autodiscovery with Bloglines, it presents me with all the feeds: RSS2, Atom, Feed, RSS, wp-rss2, wp-atom, and then finally my Feedburner feed.

I must be missing something, no?

    Thanks!

Ah, Bloglines. Unfortunately, Bloglines doesn’t search your site for feeds. What it does is pull up all of the feeds that it has stored in its database for https://www.jonwatson.ca/blog/ . Unfortunately, there is nothing that you can do about that. After a few months of 302s (permanent redirects), Bloglines will remove those feed listings and convert your existing subscribers to the feedburner feed. Rest-assured, the only two feeds that are discovered by any normal desktop-based feed readers will be https://feeds.feedburner.com/jonwatson/IBuK and https://www.jonwatson.ca/blog/?feed=comments-rss2

Ahhh…OK. I’ll stop banging my head against the wall then. You’re right, of course. As soon as I added my site to my desktop reader it pulled up the Feedburner feed right away.

Thanks for much for all your help on this. You’ve been more than helpful ??
