Login Modal/Popup

I am pretty new to this and was hoping someone could offer some credible advice..

I am looking to add a popup login. Not looking for anything too complicated (simplemodal seemed to be just what I was looking for, but doesn’t work with my site). I just want a popup that appears when you click a login link… doesn’t need to be ajax.

All I have come up with for now is lightboxes that operate the standard login page, which is fine, but it is slow because it loads an entire new page. Any advice on how to set this up or a good (premium) plugin is appreciated.
