• Hi!

I would really appreciate if someone took the time to clear a few things out for me about multisites. I’m no pro in this, and I feel totally lost! A real newbie, nice to meet you all !

I tried it once before and it crashed my hole website… or two of my websites… so yeah

Anyway, so I have two domains (hosted by Bluehost). One “main domain” so the second domain became an “addon”domain. Lets call them maindomain.com and addon.com.

By experience (…) I now know I can’t install multisite on an addon domain. So I now installed it on maindomain.com

But I’m not sure what to do next.

(My goal is to use BuddyPress on addon.com)

I have a subdomain looking like this on my host: my-addon.maindomain.com. Is it this one I should use as a subdomain or should I create a new one ?

And…Should I go to maindomain.com dashboard and create a new SITE? And call it as the subdomain name, my-addon.maindomain.com? Does that mean that for changing theme, writing things etc I from now on always have to login to maindomain.com even if it’s the other website, addon.com, I want to edit?

I know this is so much questions I just been reading, reading, reading on the internet but I’m not even sure anymore what conecerns me and what doesn’t! I don’t understand how this all works..

I would really appreciate some help…
    Sry if my english sucks..
Thank you all for your time.

    Let’s back up ??

    1) What kind of URLs do you want to have? domain.com/subsite or subsite.domain.com?

    2) Do you plan on MAPPING domains later?

    3) Your ‘add on’ domain will be separate from the multisite. Is that okay?

Sorry for double posting ! I know I’m a bit (very) unpatient …. Really sorry for that.

    1) Not sure what you’re asking here. I want to have my addon’s URL. Which is only addon.com. The subdomains name I don’t care about as I dont want them to show (this is possible, right..?) This leads me to 2)I thought I had to make subdomains and then redirect it to addon.com..? So I tried mapping but not sure how it works and if it’s that I should use.

    3) That’s fine as long as when people USES the addon webite the URL should stay on addon.com or addon.com/blog or whatever pages I will have on the addon account.

I also I tried to park my addon domain so instead of having its own folder it goes in public_html, but when visiting addon.com it only redirects to maindomain.com (which I guess it’s the hole point of it) and when I asked my host if it’s possible to still have the URL of addon.com they said it was nothing they provided support for.

The term ‘Add on domain’ is a specific thing. You need to learn this.

Add-on domains are NOT a part of you main domain. They have their own, separate, folder, and run their own code.

Please don’t call your ‘additional domain’ an addon ?? You’ll get everyone confused. Call it a second domain, or a mapped domain.

Yes! That’s EXACTLY what you’re supposed to do! Don’t worry about your host being confused, we can fix that.

If you want WORDPRESS to run this second domain here’s what you do.

At maindomain.com make a new site, call it seconddomain, so you get maindomain.com/seconddomain

Then get a domain mapping plugin, and in that, map seconddomain to maindomain.com/seconddomain.

Park seconddomain.com on top of maindomain.com, pointing to the public_html folder.

    WordPress will handle the rest.

You may want to look at hiring someone if you’re having that much trouble.

There are ebooks out there that can spell things out. Look for things like ‘Enable Multisite’ and ‘Professional Domain Mapping’ or even ‘WordPress Multisite 101’ (disclosure, I wrote the last one, and my bff’s the other two). But you’re going to need to be patient, read closely, and pay close attention to what you’re doing, just like when you were learning to drive ?? The rules of the road make sense, but never on the first week.
