    I ran into the same problem while working on mine. I ended up having to tweak the html, css and sometimes even the plugin to get different plugins and lists to work.

    In the end, I found if I used <ul> before and </ul> after the <li></li> I could get it to work and validate.

    Thank you! I fixed the problem by replacing the sidebar.php file existing on my server with the sidebar.php offered in the WordPress download. Now all that’s left to do is kill off the child links again.
