• This morning I clicked to deactivate the W3 Total Cache plugin. It had been operating without a problem for months although I did not have all the options activated.

Immediately upon clicking “Deactivate” I got the white screen of death. I tried clearing the browser cache. Still white screen. Per some of the other threads, I tried deleting through my C-Panel File Manager the W3 folder in the plugins folder: still white screen. I tried renaming the entire plugins folder to “plugins_hold” : still white screen.

I have not installed any other plugins in the last 30 days or so. I have not made any mods to the php coding in many more than 30 days.

Logic leads me to wonder if W3 places files in places other than the plugin folder that I must find and delete to regain access to the admin screen?

Is there any other answer short of a reinstall of WP and a restore from a backup? And even then, how can I safely remove W3 without a recurrence of the white screen?
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Ram

I answered my own question and solved the issue, so perhaps this answer will help others.

There is indeed a file found in the wp-content folder (this is a single file) named W3 etc etc index.php.

When I deleted that file, the white screen went away and I regained full access to the admin screen.

Any idea what the errors in the error log were at the time? The index.php file simply prevents directory listing as a security measure.
