Flexible Featured Content Plugin

I’m looking for a good plugin that will allow me to fill the home page with the most recent post (and image) from various categories.

I would also like to be able to adjust the size so some of them are horizontal and others are square.

Does anyone have any ideas about the best options?

I tried Smooth Slider but it appears as though all the boxes will have to remain the same size. I also couldn’t figure out how to change the title of each box so they all said “recent posts” instead of the names of each category.
