Need advice on how to manage/configure my site

The main purpose of my website is to have a place for family and friends to come and look at the recent photos/videos of my son.

But I would also like to open it up to more than that. I would like to be able to ‘blog’ about my coding work, some of my study results, etc…

I have a subscription plugin so people can get updates of new pictures. But I don’t necessarily want ‘those people’ to get an email when I post about some of my research.

So how would be the best way to do this? It seems like having multiple blogs might be the best way, but at the same time, I want to be able to have a main page that contains all of my recent posts.
