[Plugin: Facebook] Plugin Lacks Ability To ALSO Display WP Comments

If Facebook comments could allow linking to the commentators’ blogs then we wouldn’t need an extra commenting system but since that feature is not available we need the additional WP commenting system since that is how bloggers build back links. Also, since the Facebook commenting system overrides the WP commenting system it makes it look like our blogs have no readership to those visiting, IDK if you guys know this but comments show that our blogs are not lonely deserted places people never visit. If there could somehow be an import WP comments feature, then this would eliminate the need for another commenting system. Have a great day : )

Karla, an import feature from WP into FB would be VERY tricky business per privacy policies. Do you feel ALL of your commentors would outright approve you giving their IP addresses, email addresses, and spoken words to Facebook with a re-use license? Tread carefully with what power we hold in our hands as privacy protection laws govern us as site owners (and we tend to forget that).

More important is a FB into WP import so that we always retain a native, archival copy of what has been contributed to our site. This ownership of content is why most of us are on WP.org in the first place. This import, which other plugins do provide now, from FB is important for us as content/site owners.

I don’t necessarily agree about the backlink thing fixing all the other issues. The situation is complex as the team at livefyre.com has observed with their alternative system (which includes a backlink system). There are a lot of technical and seo factors that go into that and most of the time it results in control being removed from the site owner and thus the site owners reject the work.

I personally believe that both systems can be used in tandem and harmoniously with some modifications that other WP devs have already been working on.

PS: I have to say some of the new tools like social mentions and the recommendation bar that came with this plugin are just awesome. I may be being kinda rough on the comment aspect, but there is a LOT of good things in this plugin. I love what the team has done and I look forward to improved iterations in the near future as feedback is attained.

Thanks for the feedback! We’ve heard the request for support for retroactively making the native comments system available for old blog posts.

IMO if a blogger wants more comments on their blog, the system to do that needs to be simple. Less choice, no registration, no outside commenting system, not Disqus, or Livefyre, or Facebook, no registration required to comment.

Every time you tie your site to some other site, especially an authority site, you run the risk of losing your traffic to something bigger and shinier.

But I would add to our friends comment, that I have received feedback from friends, that the feature as it is now, does seems a bit intrusive, for the actual comment someone places on our post does not keep “restricted” to this post, but spreads out with a different behaviour. Let’s say, by using other fb plugins before, every time someone placed a comment, this would be added to the post, and would appear to original facebook post of that article. But now it appears to fb users wall as an update of their wall, not as a comment on a post. Do you see the difference? I will explain:
If I comment on a facebook post of someone else, this will appear to other users not on their most important updates feed, but rather on the sidebar comments feed. Only people following a post will see the updates. But, when I comment on a wpsite using facebook plugin comments this shows up as wall post to all my followers (friends) to see. Sometimes, users don’t want that, because they want either because they don’t this to feature on their wall, either cause their participation a bit more private (e.g. restricted to those with similar interests).
Thus, I felt people are less eager to comment on my pages, cause they feel this feature is (or might be) overpopulating their wall.

I think there should be a box with tabs that seperate comments from wp, fb, trackbacks, etc. in the spirit of the seperate trackbacks mod. Ideally, if someone wanted to only allow fb commenting, the wp comments tab would hide. I’m not using this mod feature because my comments aren’t stored in my db and because it replaces wp commenting. i want my user inputin my db, that’s why i self host. if i didn’t, why not just signup for myspace and give all my fans away?
