    Hi All,

I have just completed a “5 minute installation” of WordPress onto Dreamhost. I was able to follow the prescribed steps and complete comfortably within 2 hours. I want to emphasize – it was a vanilla installation, with no special settings, manipulation etc.

However…when I point to wp-install.php with my browser, I receive a generic error message “Error: PHP is not running…”

Several previous threads on this forum have raised similar issues but all speak in tech-language that is difficult to understand. They seem to indicate an issue with the mysql database that was set up on the Dreamhost server?

In layman terms please…is this a common issue? Are there simple steps that I can take to resolve?

    Thanks, Tony

  • Contact your hosts. It’s a server issue.

Since PHP is both enabled and at versions that are compatible with WordPress on all our servers, this certainly shouldn’t be happening.

If you contact support directly, at the following URL, they’ll be able to give you the best information that’s specific to your account:
    https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=support.msg&

If you post the URL to your WordPress site, I’ll take a quick look for you, though!

Thanks Mike, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
Sure, I’m happy for you to poke around the site if you feel inclined..!

Could the php problem be at all related to my stock standard Windows 7 laptop on which I have installed WordPress and am viewing pages? Would you expect I need to download or enable PHP on the laptop? Seems a bit extreme to me but then…I just don’t know.

    Thanks so much, Tony

That URL loads the WordPress Install page for me.

You can see this what I’m seeing (through an anonymous proxy) here:
    https://anonymouse.org/cgi-bin/anon-www.cgi/https://www.tonyadamspm.com/wp-admin/install.php

If this is a new domain or you recently pointed it to DreamHost, it’s possible that DNS hasn’t yet propagated (since that takes 24-48 hours).

I’d suggest flushing your DNS and restarting your browser/computer to see if that helps. You can see instructions for flushing your DNS cache here:
    https://wiki.dreamhost.com/Flush_DNS

Also, of course — if you have custom entries in your local hosts file for setting up the domain manually, you’ll want to revert or remove them so that you can set up WordPress on the server itself.

If you’re referring to a local install not functioning (using something like XAMPP), then you are probably looking at problems with your configuration there, rather than issues at DreamHost.

Hopefully this helps! Let me know if you run into problems, or have further questions.

    Thanks Mike,

I pointed the name servers to the 3 Dreamhost servers about 24 hours ago and am waiting to see how it rolls out.

No custom entries in my local file or manual domain setup, all straight out of the box.

    Hi Mike,

All is well after refreshing the DNS name servers. Problem solved.
Thanks so much for your help; your advice was brilliant and greatly appreciated
