Best URLs for SEO optimization question

  • I have a personal domain already, and there are contents in it, all in sub-directories. Not web pages, but some photo galleries and things like that.

    For SEO optimization (or other reasons) is it ok or bad to have my wordpress blog in its own /blog sub-directory. Or should I try to keep it at the top level and mix it with my other already existing sub-directories?

    Inside /blog the URLs would look like https://mydomain.com/blog/post-title

  • I’m sure that SEO “gurus” will wag their finger at me and argue, but I don’t think that it matters. The url is one thing, but CONTENT is king. If you have good content, that’s way more important than your urls. I think that your blog in a blog sub-directory is perfectly fine.

    Heck, my WordPress site is not in a sub-directory, but my blog is a page and all of my blog articles are in the “blog” folder, and my SEO has not suffered.

    Oh crap, I lied.

    My site has this – https://www.bluelimemedia.com/blog/
    but then when you click a post, it goes to the date.

    For ex – https://www.bluelimemedia.com/2012/06/06/wordpress-query-comprehensive-reference/

    But you would think that if 2012/06/06 is ok, then surely blog will be fine no?

    Again, I’m no SEO expert (in fact, I think SEO is bullshit), I think that the Url is not as important as the title of your post or the content.

    Ooh. I just had a fun idea (sparked by your about.me/crondeau link, Christine).

    I have always used my personal name domain, like douglerner.com for my blog.

    But I also own the “fun” domain earth.to. I could make the blog earth.to/doug.

    I have always realized that is possible, but hesitated over SEO concerns.

    Might be fun though.

    Interesting. Even hovering over one of your post links it is not showing “/blog” in the URLs. So it doesn’t seem like a URL rewrite.

    Anyway, I don’t know much about SEO either. I just “vaguely heard” that the higher up you were to your domain root level the better.

    Do you think duplicate content, for example the same content appearing in many of one’s blog can harm SEO?

    That is correct in that many sites have hundreds of sub-domains and sub-folders. If you have just a main site and then a blog (with separate content), should be fine.

    So you are of the opinion that URLs of the form

    mydomain.com/some-post-title

    and

    mydomain.com/blog/some-post-title

    are all equally ok?

    I’m trying to consolidate everything in one place because, as Krishna alluded to above, currently I have duplicated content. That is not intentional. I’m attempting to migrate away from Posterous.

    I think I found a good way to accomplish that finally, and am just trying to settle on which domain and/or sub-folder to use.

    Can you tell me if I import blog A to Blog B, and then import Blog B to Blog C, and all the three blogs are running concurrently, without the first two redirecting URLs to Blog C, can be harmful? Would it amount to duplicate content?

    Hi, Krishna. Yes, you have given me lots of valuable help, and I appreciate it.

    This thread really is a separate issue from my import problem. Now I’m trying to consolidate and just trying to decide where my ultimate destination should be.

    In answer to the question you asked SwansonPhotos above, I think it would be duplicated content, and I agree with you that’s not good. I am trying to avoid that as I make my final migration.

    No. There are tons of sites with very similar content made each day. Think News.

    If the content is identical in all three blogs, then yes – there is an impact.

    The SAME domain should not contain, in any sub-domain or folder, the same content as root.

    I am not sure why you are having this issue…on a good web host, you create a folder in your hosting account, upload WordPress (I never recommend using host provided installers) (modify .htaccess and wp-config.php properly) and use our host tools to point your domain to this folder (once domain has propagated). Run site. Done. Repeat for new domain.
