Just a quick question. Is it possible to get round the 2mb limit set by the server using FTP?

I know I can upload files through FTP larger than 2mb, I just can’t figure out how to do this from WordPress. I want a page that’s domain.com/upload/ and guests will be able to upload (.zip) files larger than 2mb but I want it to go through FTP to avoid the 2mb limit.

Note: There’s no way to increase the limits, no php.ini, no .htaccess changes, nothing. Changing this on the server will apparently screw up some things elsewhere because it hosts a lot of things.

Are there any plugins or links to anything that could help?

  • No. – if you are relegated to that upload limit at the server side, you aren’t going to bypass it… (and with a limit that low, I’d probably look for alternative hosting…)

_I’d think with a host so restrictive, providing front facing upload service, and ftp connections would definitely violate some TOS

No, it’s our own hosted server for internal projects but it was around long before I arrived and set up that way to begin with. Since everything has worked on that configuration for years it’s not going to change any time soon.

Anyway, thanks for the response, looks like we’re going to have to create a new server for these things.

    Ah I see!

Yeah, I’m not sure of a way to handle any sort of FTP connection through browser / front-end. And I’ve definitely tried – I run a DJ site where I use to try to allow full DJ set uploads, which always failed through the browser. There was some ftp front-end software I’d tested, but it wasn’t through WP… and ultimately wasn’t kept up to date, or all that user friendly – I’d also think that providing that kind of access would cause some security heartache (but that isn’t my area of strength, so I’m running on a hunch there)

I can agree with the security issues. Most of the places I’ve looked have been worried about that. We were looking at just allowing the user to upload zip files, or maybe enter a password we could give them before clicking upload.

At the moment we have to set up an FTP account every time a user wants to send us a file so we were looking to do something via our WordPress install.. There are some plugins for guest uploads, not the best but useable, but it’s getting around that upload limit..
