Child Theme or Custom Theme?

    Hi. I’m about to build a site. I’m just trying to work out whether it’s better to make a child theme of the default theme or go for a custom design where I convert my html/css into WordPress. Am I right in thinking that if I go for the latter then I would lose everything when WP updates?
    Help appreciated. Thanks.
