  • Looks like the wordfence.com domain expired so API calls are breaking and resulting in fatal errors.

I’d deactivate the plugin until it’s resolved. It broke commenting on a client’s site.

that’s so ridiculous and surprising. how could they let that happen? it takes work to lose a domain name. i hope it’s coming back…

?? hopefully it’s just a DNS propagation issue and will resolve quickly…
According to ping.eu the domain name was updated today and is not due to expire until 2013. Looks like it should be soon for you.

    Hi guys,

We just discovered this. Looks like Godaddy never renewed our domain even though it’s set to auto-renew and the CC on file with them is valid.

This has resulted in noc1.wordfence.com not being reachable.

The domain is now renewed and DNS updates are propogating out but will take a few minutes to reach all sites.

We are investigating with godaddy why the &*%$ they screwed this up and will report back with a full post mortem.

My sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. We will work to ensure this never happens again in future.

    Regards,

    Mark.

Update: I’ve just put out an emergency release for the plugin which accesses our scanning server using it’s static IP rather than it’s domain name. This will fix all issues you’re currently having.

The code is checked in and I’m waiting for the WordPress repository to update.

    Regards,

    Mark.

Further update: 3.1.6 is now confirmed in the repo and the WordPress servers have replicated it. I’ve done a repo install and re-tested the fix and it works great.

The DNS fix is fully propagated at this time. I’ve confirmed this from three geographic locations.

So it looks like we’re out of the woods.

Folks, my apologies for the inconvenience caused. I’d like to reiterate that we are taking steps to ensure this doesn’t happen again. That includes improving Wordfence itself to deal gracefully with this kind of failure, looking at our infrastructure and service providers, our server monitoring systems and our internal procedures.

    Yours sincerely,

    Mark Maunder

so is this upgrade necessary if things are resolving properly?

    Plugin Author Wordfence Security

    (@mmaunder)

No it’s not necessary, but you should upgrade anyway so that you’re alerted and can upgrade when we release the next version.

    To be clear:

3.1.4 Now works because our DNS issues have been resolved.

3.1.6 Will also work whether we’re having DNS issues or not.

Please upgrade to 3.1.6 so that you are alerted when we release 3.1.7 and can upgrade.

    Thanks,

    Mark.
