• If I edit a page (or presumably any post) and press the button that should show the full article, the screen goes blank. This is new to version 3.4.1, I think.

  • Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    – re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress.

The same behaviour occurs in editing posts.

I have tried using the Twenty Eleven theme, but it is far too ugly to be used without considerable adaptation.

The problem with deactivating plugins is quite simple: it exposes the whole site to attack. This has already happened without my inexpert assistance. There is a command to put the whole site into suspense (maintenance mode?), but I don’t know what it is. I will try deactivating all plugins not related to security.

I have tried deactivating plugins not security-related and it makes no difference. I suggest that this is a bug.

These are not necessarily permanent changes. They are the most basic troubleshooting steps designed to begin a process of elimination to locate the cause of the problem.

it exposes the whole site to attack.

Oh – I’m sorry but that’s just ridiculous! See https://blog.sucuri.net/2012/03/wordpress-understanding-its-true-vulnerability.html

Bottom line: If you cannot help us by carrying out the steps we suggest, then we really cannot hep you.

    Specifically:-

    (1) The font for the header bar is too big.

    (2) The whole text is in full caps.

I suggest that this is a bug.

It is not a bug in WordPress core. It’s an issue that is specific to your site. Now do you want to try and find the cause of the problem? If “yes”, then please start by following the steps I gave above and reporting back with the results.

    See https://blog.sucuri.net/2012/03/wordpress-understanding-its-true-vulnerability.html

I already subscribe to Sucuri. I make no claim to be an expert on WordPress: in fact the last upgrade had to be done manually by an engineer, because automatic upgrade no longer works for me.

Perhaps you can tell me where in the Twenty Eleven theme I need to look to address the problems mentioned earlier.

Have you carried out any of the steps recommended above?

Have you carried out any of the steps recommended above?

    1) Deactivating all plugins: no effect.

    2) Using the Twenty Eleven theme – no effect.

    3) Resetting plugins by FTP: no effect.

I do not feel qualified to carry out
    4) re-uploading all files & folders – except the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress;

as the site has only just been upgraded to the latest version at my expense.

I’m sorry but you really do need to carry out step 4 to rule the possibility of a corrupted/damaged core file.

Now try disabling the Symposium plugin. It is totally borking your pages.
