WordPress sites not working after webhost maintenance

  • Yesterday, Bravenet (the webhost I use) was down for a while “doing maintenance. When it came back, my two WordPress websites were not working. You can see the basic theme but no articles show up. There are error messages at the top and splashed elsewhere across the layout. Clicking on a page gets you the 404 Error page.

    The problem seemed to be fixed for a while, then returned. I have a support request into Bravenet, but my other non-wordpress website is working fine, so I thought I should also ask here for a wordpress solution.

    The affected websites are:

    hollywoodgothique.com
    cinefantastiqueonline.com

    The error messages at the top of the page (on both sites) are:

  • Ask them what they did. Perhaps they upgraded MySQL or PHP.

    I have forwarded the question to Bravenet. We’ll see what they say…

    Do you use the Event Calendar plugin perhaps? When you ‘google’ the error, you will see that many people get this error when they upgraded PHP and the problem often seemed the Events Calendar plugin. Should you use it, you might want to use FTP to go to the folder /wp-content/plugins/ and change the name of the Events Calendar folder so it gets deactivated. That might solve the error.

    Thank you! Event Calendar was the problem; since de-activating it, my websites are back online.

    Now I just have to figure out how to make the plug-in work again; I find it very useful

    Bravenet says that in anticipation of dropping PHP 5.2 this month, they recently switched the default to 5.3. Could that have caused the plug-in problem?

    Actually, it turns out that Bravenet had intended to switch all their customers to 5.3 a while back, but in fact my website did not get switched until right before the problem started, so that seems to be a factor.

    I now notice that my YET ANOTHER RELATED POSTS plug-in produces this error message on the website:

    Warning: strip_tags() expects parameter 1 to be string, array given in /misc/14/272/478/925/3/user/web/cinefantastiqueonline.com/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 631

    It looks like you may have to look for alternative for plugins that don’t support PHP 5.3. The Events Calendar claims to go up to WP 3.1.4, so that’s not going to help.
