• Hi Folks

I have developed a WP site in a subdirectory (let’s call it WP_subdir) of a client’s server, while the old site remains active in the root.

This week we’re going to switch it over so the WP site becomes the main site, and I’ve got the article on how to do that.

Here’s my question – I noticed that WP has been inserting absolute paths when I insert an image or other resource into a post, for example:

    https://www.mydomain.com/%5BWP_subdir%5D/%5Brest of path]/image.jpg

However, once I change the “Site URL” to remove the [WP_subdir], will all permalinks break, or does WP use the “WordPress Address (URL)” setting when locating resources?

Any help appreciated! I’m still relatively new to WordPress.

    Cheers
    Richard

  • You are right, and this is one thing that annoys a lot of people (me included). Unfortunately there’s not many other ways to do it that work 100% of the time, so it’s hard to propose anything else.

As a solution, I use this tool to search-and-replace the URL values in the database. Follow the instructions for it and you’ll find that it’s very easy.
