Would moving categories lead to some problems ?

  • I’ve been thinking that when I start blogging I tend to open a new category and after blogging for awhile I realize that some category should become a sub-category.
    Seeing that all those posts are already indexed by search engines, woudn’t I get a lot of 404’s ?
    Should I consider making a long term plan for my categories, and forget about moving them around ?

  • It”s not a problem so long as you use the regular links (?p=72132), but if you use permalinks 404’s might happen.

    You could add additional permalinks in your code to ensure that old links direct to new.

    e.g. ^oldcat/?$ ^newcat/newsubcat/ [QSA,L,R=301]
