Child Theme Help/Advise

  • Hi all,

    I have been modifing my theme for some time now and recently updated it and noticed some of the changes had been over-written. So now, rather late I know, I’m looking into creating a child theme so this doesn’t happen again.

    So my question is this, how do I go about doing this? I have read the Codex for this and understand I should start with a simple style.css file, and then from what I understand I need to copy just the edited files to the new theme?

  • Is this what you are following? Child Theme

    Do you have the child theme folder set up with the style.css file inside? The new style.css file has only the top comment section and the @import line on it.

    Once you’ve done the above and activated it — then yes, you would copy any CSS changes to that file.

    Changed php files go in the child folder as well.

    Have you changed anything else?

    Yes that is what I am following and I copied the edited files to the child theme folder and nothing was displayed on my homepage or admin cp. Not sure why. I followed the directory structure as it was in the parent theme.

    What do you mean “nothing was displayed”? Did you activate the child theme? Can you link to the site?

    Hi WPyogi,

    I activated the child theme and everything was gone, not a lot more I can say. But I think I figured that out as it was to do with duplicate functions, as in I had them displayed on both the child theme and inside the main theme.

    One thing I couldn’t figure out was it changed the order of my menu items which I haven’t been able to figure out.
