    Hi,

Please can I check as I’m a little confused by the category features. If I am using the import as post function is it possible to assign an existing category that I have in my blog to the imported rss post?

Is this simply done by creating a category iin the ‘Category Options’ assign it to the feed … and as long as the category already exists … it assigns it to the imported posts? So then if I go to my blog and the category it will show up?

Thanks … great plugin by the way!

    Nick

    Hi,
If you have an existing category just assign that in the Feed to Posts tab…then any feeds that are associated with that category will come in as blog posts. You don’t need to set up any new categories for this to work. Does that make sense?

I’m assuming this worked for you.

    Hi Allen,
I was waiting for a day till new posts were imported and they are still coming in as Uncategorized. So I must be doing something wrong.

When I go to the ‘Feed To Post Options’ tab where do I assign the category?

Is it this option: ‘Restrict to one of your defined categories’ which I then set to a category I have set up under the ‘Category Options’ tab? Which are then assigned to a feed under the ‘RSS Feeds’ tab?

Another question I have … to match these categories up to ones that I use for my WP posts … do I create the category as the name or the slug … for example:
    name: Food & Wine
    or
    slug: food-wine

    Hope that makes sense? :o)

    Thanks

    Hi
First of all, if you want to restrict to a category, you need to first set up categories and assign which feeds you want to that category.

Then, under the Feed to Post tab, select the category you want. You’re not creating a slug for the Feed to Post (you do create a slug for the Export Feed Option – but that is a completely separate function that creates an RSS feed).

    Does this make sense?

Also, right now, all posts come in as Uncategorized as I haven’t set that up as an option yet (people would need to know the ID number of the wordpress category that set up to do this, and it’s not obvious).

    Hi Allen,

Sorry I think I’m getting confused. I am only wanting to use the rss feeds to import as posts so the main thing I’m trying to use is the Feed to Posts.

My original question was .. is it possible for these imported posts to be assigned a category (I’m talking about the blog post categories in wordpress not the categories within the plugin).

So if I had a Food & Wine blog page that shows posts I have assigned the ‘Food & Wine’ category to, and I would like to have some of them come from a 3rd party rss … can I auto assign a category to them as they are imported?

I think you mention if I know the category ID then it might be possible? I do know the category IDs … but does this involve php coding? If so, I’m out of my comfort zone ;o)

right now, the current plugin does not allow you to put the posts into a specific category you set up on wordpress (i.e., you wordpress categories). To do this, which is simple on my part as far as coding it, would be to have the user determine the ID number of the category they set up on wordpress. If you go to your wordpress categories, you’ll see that the category ID number for, say, Food and Wine is not obvious, but that number is what you need to programmatically insert the posts into a category.

So, if you know the id number of your category (called, I think, tag_id), I could give you a file right now that will send all posts directly into that WordPress category.

ok..I’m launching the next version tomorrow that will give you this ability…as long as you know the category ID.

Hi Allen, That sounds great! Thank you.
Can I double check. Will this allow us to assign multiple categories for the different feeds we have? Or will it add all posts to one category.

For example, it would be great to be able to assign all imported posts from the BBC Good Food rss to my wordpress ‘Food & Wine’ category and a local events rss to my wordpress ‘Travel Events’ category. Will that be possible, or am I asking too much now!! :o)

At this point, its only 1 category…having specific feeds go into different categories would require a lot more programming…maybe something for a future version (or a completely new plugin).

    Hi Allen,

Your not going to believe this but the category I would like to enter is 120 … and the new field you kindly created only takes 2 characters.

Is that right or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Nick

    (@amweiss98)

right..ok if you know how to edit php files you can easily change that to 3 characters…if you don’t know I can send you a file right now (and I’ll make the change on the next update I push to allow 3 characters.

    Wow that was quick!

do you want to just let me know which snippet it is I need to change and I can do it through the plugin editor? What ever is easier.

    Thanks
