• I am using Yoast SEO plugin on a site and all is working correctly apart from a duplicate meta tag problem. If I look at my rendered page source I can see…

<meta name=”description” content=”Learn how to paint with watercolours and charcoal”/>

    and

<meta property=’og:description’ content=’Learn how to paint with watercolours and charcoal’/>

I am assuming this is where the duplicate issue is ocurring, I understand that one of these is used by Facebook etc.. to pull in post data, so I also assume that I can do away with the first tag and just use the og:description one?

If this is correct how would I go about removing it? I have checked my theme and all plugins and it appears as if the Yoast plugin is generating both.

    Can anyone help?

Ok after looking into it further I can see the cause…

If I dont add a custom description to the ‘social’ section when creating a post then the Yoast plugin automatically creates me an Open Graph meta tag using the post content. This is where the duplication is happening.

If I write a custom description then the problem goes away. Can anyone shed any light on if this is a bug or just the way I am using it?

I have tried to turn off the Open Graph tags but removing the tick from the checkbox is having no affect
