    Hi Mark,

This is the new warning you are getting:
Folder /wordpress was skipped due to a conflict caused by use of non-UTF8 names. Rename the folder and remove all special characters to resolve.

The message is not complete and there is another case you can get the warning: you might have two files or folders with the same name but different case.

It seems you have in your site a folder called “wordpress” and another file or folder with the same name (but different case). For example, “WorDPress” or “WordPress”.

Some file systems support this case insensitivity but our plugin doesn’t at this time. Previous versions would skip all but the last file/folder of that name during online backup and backup all files during download or email backup due to a side effect. In the new version it resolves the problems for online backup and unifies the behaviour with download backup and both will skip everything after the first file and report a warning. The number of times this happens is extremely rare though.

We’re working on supporting case sensitive file systems fully currently.

The workaround is to rename the files so they don’t conflict. That is, make sure you don’t have two files with same name and different case as it always has problems.

    Thanks Jason.

I don’t see any file names in the /wordpress directory that have any special characters? If they are there then WordPress created them and needs them to be named as such.

There is no folder within /wordpress that is named anything like WordPress or a case derivative of wordpress?

There are no other folders are /wordpress that are case derivatives of /wordpress?

    Hi Mark,

    I don’t mean inside /wordpress, I mean inside /

    So you have:
    /wordpress
    /wordPREss

    Or something. Can you check?

    Jason.

    Thread Starter Mark Housel

    (@mark-housel)

I looked, and the only folders that have the characters ‘wordpress’ are the /wordpress folder that is being ignored and an older copy /wordpressold

Clearly there are many things that I don’t understand here?

    Hi Mark,

Any files by that name? Containing “WordPress”?
We can get you a diagnostic version of the plugin if not to see what’s happening under the hood as it is a bit odd if its not due to special characters or case differences!

    Thread Starter Mark Housel

    (@mark-housel)

I searched my entire directory structure for ‘wordpress’ and get this

    /public_html/wordpress
    /public_html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/twentyeleven/images/wordpress.png
    /public_html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/twentyten/images/wordpress.png
    /public_html/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/wpstorecart/test/nb-wordpress-tests
    /public_html/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/wpsc/theme_backup/images/wordpress.png
    /public_html/wordpress/wp-admin/images/wordpress-logo-2x.png
    /public_html/wordpress/wp-admin/images/wordpress-logo.png
    /public_html/wordpress/wp-includes/js/tinymce/plugins/wordpress

If I am interpreting your question correctly there can be no file or directory anywhere at all that contains the characters ‘wordpress’, even if there are other characters or extensions that make the file/directory name different if there exists a directory named ‘wordpress’?

That make no sense whatsoever to me? Besides I don’t get to decide what WordPress names its internal files and directories.

    Hi Mark,

I’ve changed the topic to unresolved. Not sure why it changed though…

Right, I can see from your list you don’t have any “conflicts”. A colleague informs me he’s already reproduced this issue. You will have “Backup the WordPress parent directory” ticked… Which appears to be now broken in 2.2.10. Apologies for this.

A release is about to be pushed to fix everything, including this one. With full support for case sensitive file systems and to finally fix all the issues with non-UTF8 files.

This will be 2.2.11. I’ll let you know when it’s pushed out.

    Hi Mark Housel,

2.2.11 has been released moments ago and should be available within the next hour. Please update and let us know if you continue to have issues.

It fixes this issue with the “Backup WordPress parent directory” option that was broken in 2.2.10.

    Thanks,

    Jason

    Jason,

that seems to have resolved the problem. No warnings and the backup file size is back to very similar to previous working backups.

    Thanks,

Good news! Thanks for letting us know.

    Jason.

    Hi Jason,
I’m having the same problem using 2.2.13

Online Backup for WordPress Plugin Version 2.2.13
    PHP Version: 4.4.8
    MySQL Server Version: 4.1.22
    MySQL Client Version:
    Mem: ; Post: 8M; Upload: 2M; Timeout: 30
    End of Information

Its complaining about UTF8 files, but I’ve no idea where to find them. I’ve 239 errors saying the same thing.

How can we get hold of a debug version to find these issues?

    (@driskell)

    Hi Damian,

The errors should mention the path to the file. Generally the error should ONLY ever appear, if you have two files with non-UTF8 characters that are very similar. We are unable to fully support file systems running with different lettering systems and only fully support UTF8 ones. For those other systems we try to be compatible by replacing things with question marks.

For example, if we have two files:
    File????.txt
    File????.txt

Both are different file names, and the question marks are special characters from the system’s lettering system (code page), and the characters are different in each file. However, these characters do not exist in UTF8 and so we have to replace them with question marks before we back them up in order to maintain as much compatibility as we can with our systems and also other systems should you need to restore.

Looking at the example though, we have two files now with the same name after we replace with question marks, since the question marks are identical. This results in one file backed up and the other an error reported due to a conflict, since you can’t have two files with the same name.

You should be able to see the file from the error you get and rename it or fix it to be valid UTF8.

We chose UTF8 as it is a single code page / lettering system that encompasses nearly all modern languages, more than any other, and it’s goal is to be such a thing.

    Jason.

    Hi Jason,
where can I see the file name?

All I can see in the activity report is this…

Warning File was skipped due to a conflict caused by use of non-UTF8 names. Rename the file and remove all special characters to resolve.

It is not giving me any other details?

    Hi Damian,

I’ll look into this for you. You could try our diagnostics version too and send us the log file if possible to help investigate:

You can download it here: https://wordpress.backup-technology.com/wponlinebackup-423-tracing.zip

You’ll need to Deactivate and Delete the plugin you’ve already got installed (please note it will lose your settings, sorry). Then you go to Plugins, then click Add New at the top, click the Upload option and then upload the ZIP file above.

It will look like the usual plugin but will create a file called trace.log at /wp-content/plugins/wponlinebackup-423-tracing/trace.log
Please run an online backup and reproduce the problem. The log will have some file names and paths inside but nothing any more sensitive than that.

You can email your blog URL to support “at” backup-technology.co.uk and we can try to access the trace.log in our web browser and see what’s happening. Or you could download it via FTP, compress it, and email it.
We can then investigate. Let me know if you aren’t sure on any of the above.

    Jason
