Plugins and Updates

  • Here is a suggestion for the next version of WordPress.

    For Plugins, there are occurrences where two plugins with similar names conflict and updates accidentally get tagged to the other’s plugin. This causes no end of trouble for the user base.

    To correct this, have the developers create a Hashcode that specifically identifies the Plugin. Only updates to that plugin that use the same Hashcode will be recognized and allowed to update the plugin. This should prevent similarly named plugins from conflicting with each other. That is unless they are purposefully trying to hack another plugin.

    Just my two cents.

    This only happens between a plugin hosted on WP.org and one hosted elsewhere. It can’t happen with two .org plugins.

    People who aren’t using .org can use better names for their plugin/theme folders to prevent that from happening (like name-mangler-domain.com, which would be very rare to ever get used by anyone else)
