In the plugin, you have a choice of either performing an incremental backup to the online vault or perform a full backup and email it somewhere.

I would think I need to create at least one full backup for the online vault – then do incrementals after that. Is this not so?

A follow on. At some point, the vault will be full. I would then like to remove the information from the vault and start all over again with a new backup dataset.

Am I missing the boat? I don’t see any way of doing these procedures.

    Hi binskeep,

The first backup to the online vault will send everything so depending on what view you take it could be considered not incremental. But after the first it is always incremental.

When the 100 MB is reached, the online vault will automatically remove older copies of data. It will try to keep as many snapshots of your blog as it can hold, and will never delete the latest snapshot so you always have the latest backup available. So unless the latest backup of your blog reaches 100 MB it will run fine forever. It will report an error if you reach this.

So, the take away is that life will be good as long as you don’t remove the first backup.

    Hi Bob,

The first backup to get deleted if you run out of space will be data from the first backup. As mentioned it will try to keep as many snapshots online as possible, but never delete the last backup that occurred, because that’s the latest.

In my experience, when recovering data that has been saved incrementally, you had to recover a full backup to beging with, then apply the incremental change. If the first backup that is in the vault contains everything, that would be the ‘full backup’. Then each backup dataset would be the delta of that.

Please pardon me for my confusion. I’m sure it works, I’m just trying to understand how (at a high level).

    Thanks,

    Hi binskeep,

The online vault is incremental forever and all performed automatically – essentially the incremental only refers to the way the backup works, in that it only sends to the server what is changed.

You don’t need to worry about having to restore incrementals – what you download from the online vault will always be a pre-composed full backup, containing all data that existed on your server at that time (we call it a snapshot.) If you think about it, the server knows what changes were made on each occasion the backup ran, so if you ask it for a snapshot of your blog on X date, it has enough information to do this for you. No need to manually download a full then hundreds or thousands of incrementals.

    Jason.
