I want to provide my folks a seamless transition between their old website, which is a non-wordpress site, and the new. An experienced developer recommended I use WordPress for the new site and after looking at what it offers I agree.

It looks like I can’t install WordPress in the main directory with the old site and still have the old site function. If this is correct (and please tell me if I’m mistaken!), would creating a second domain on my server, installing and building the new WordPress there then moving it to the final domain after it’s approved be feasible? The new site needs to be approved before it goes live and I’d prefer an absolute minimum of downtime between the two.

Is there a simpler, more efficient way to accomplish this that I am overlooking in my inexperience?

Create a new-subdomain in your web-site. Install wordpress, configure it, fill it with all required information. When you are satisfied and everything is ready, just move wordpress to our primary domain.
