mp3 sound files

    I run a broadcast archival site. Therefore, most of my site is devoted to audio files most of them much larger than 2mb. My web hoster puts no limits on the size of the audio files that I place on the site I’m about to leave. Am I going to have a problem with the WP 2mb “media” cap or is there a workaround for this? Many thanks.

    The default file upload limitations in WordPress are defined by a server side configuration file named “php.ini”, rather than by WordPress itself.

    This file is usually inaccessible to the the end user, however; many hosts allow custom php.ini files in shared hosting environments. Your best option is to contact the support group at your hosting service, and ask them their preferred method for increasing the maximum allowable file upload size via php.ini for your particular environment.

    If that fails, there is no reason why you couldn’t simply use your ftp client to upload large .mp3 files directly to a dedicated directory. The only difference is that they won’t show in the WordPress media catalog by default (this can also be circumvented via plugin), and you will have to link to them manually in a post using the absolute URL.

    Many thanks, Mr. James. This is useful info. Now I have to figure out, hopefully with input from my web hoster, if I can keep my current FTP address just as is…that is, the present “fixed” address. Seems as if I should be able to since it shouldn’t matter where I “park” my sound files as long as the “pathway” from whatever selected site to ftp server is correctly configured.

    Following up on your comment within quotes below:

    This is what my web hoster is telling me regarding my bandwidth:

    You are using 4.15 MB for your logs

    If that is correct, then I shouldn’t encounter problems uploading larger mp3 files.

    I’m just hoping that I can maintain my same FTP address and not have to tweak it in any way so as to accomodate sound files pegged to another site in a sub directory. I assume that will be something the web hoster is going to have to tell me.
