I have a hosted install of wordpress 3.5, but the media manager is not working. For example, when I click the “Add Media” button on any page nothing happens. Even if I go to Media -> Add New, after the upload has finished, it doesn’t go to the media manager.

Or in another example, I tried to update the header photo, but after upload completes, I’m taken to a blank screen instead of to the cropping screen.

Is this a wordpress issue or a webhost issue and what can I do to resolve it?

    have you tried:

■deactivating all plugins (yes, all) to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s). If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin (read https://bit.ly/UhpkLl if you need help). Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder. The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old (read https://bit.ly/WMrMM5 for more information on mu-plugins)
■switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems. If you can’t log in to change themes, you can remove the theme folders via FTP so the only one is twentyeleven. That will force your site to use it.

thanks for the help, it turns out that it was a combination of a theme issue and a wordpress /hosting service issue. my image was too large for the theme to handle but it never threw any useful error.

there were some inherent bugs in the wordpress 3.5 package that my hosting service had to fix to get the media manager working.
