setting up subdomains

It is not clear how subdomains are set up.
Are these real or virtual domains ie do I actually need to create a subdomain using cpanel, with an associated directory,
such as news.site.com located in Public_html/news
If the latter is the case what needs to be put into the subdirectory?
Do I need to install word press in full?If not what do I need to do?
How do I reference the blog page in the subdomain from the main blog.
Is it news.site.com or site.com/news
So far none of the combinations I have tried seem to work.
