FTP Failure

    I have a couple sites that are using this plugin. One site, no problems with FTP. My other site, the FTP fails. I have copied the user credentials straight from the XML export from Filezilla. I can log in with Filezilla no problem. The error I get says “we did not successfully log in”. The only difference between the two sites is one is hosted with Bluehost, the failing site is hosted with GoDaddy.

    What happens when you press the ‘Test FTP’ button in the UpdraftPlus settings?

    I get that message: FTP Failure…we did not successfully log in. I have verified the credentials are correct.

    The only thing you can really do to see what is going on is get a network packet trace to capture the packets to see what it’s doing. UpdraftPlus is just using PHP’s FTP library, which probably isn’t as sophisticated as what’s in FileZilla. But without access to the account myself, there’s little I can suggest, unless you can find someone who can help you capture the network packet trace.

    If I gave you the log in credentials could you help? Like I said, it works just fine for my other site. Was going to try to delete, re-download, and reinstall.

Reinstalling won’t change anything; the PHP library is returning that error and it’ll return it every time; so I need to see why and if I can do anything about it.

    Thank you – I received your log-in details…

    When I enter them into my UpdraftPlus and press ‘Test FTP login’, it says: ‘Settings test result: Success: we successfully logged in, and confirmed our ability to create a file in the given directory.’

    So, if you are entering the details correctly and if the login is failing for you, then there must be some firewalling in between your web server and the FTP server. You’ll need to ask your web hosting company to help with that… point them to this thread so that they can see the full context.

    P.S. I was leaving the ‘path’ entry blank in the UpdraftPlus config. So also you may need to experiment with the values you are putting in there, if you are trying to save within a sub-directory.

    Here is the response from GoDaddy. This is why I like Bluehost better.

    Thank you for contacting Online Support. I understand that a particular plugin (that backs up your WordPress website) is not functioning properly. We reviewed your account and determined that there is nothing wrong with the server. We also reviewed the link you provided. It appears that the script for the plugin is not meant for all shared hosting plans. However, we cannot alter the permissions/configuration of the server to accommodate for the plugin. We recommend reviewing the script of the plugin, or manually backing up your WordPress site. We apologize for any inconvenience.

    That’s a bit of a non-answer. ??

    If they won’t look at why the FTP server can’t be reached from their server, then why not just back up to one of Amazon, Dropbox or Google Drive instead?

    I intend to use one of those. FTP was easy for me and was working great on the site hosted by someone else. I’ll probably end up using a Google drive.

    This is in now way a problem with the plugin. The plugin is awesome. Just a host problem at this point. Thanks David for all your help today.

    I am having a similar log-in problem. I use Classic FTP and it gets me into the directory without any problems. Using the same settings via Updraft 1.4.48 I get the Failure msg when I test FTP Login thru the setting dashboard.

    It may be the Remote Path is incorrect??? What exactly is that?

    The remote path is what UpdraftPlus puts in a “change directory” command after successfully logging in. So, if ClassicFTP allows you to view its logs, then you can see what it is using to change directory after login, and copy that.

    Alternatively, there’s a cheap setup package ($25) in the shop – https://updraftplus.com/shop/ – whereby we do the setup for you.

    Thanks for that… I think!!!

    None of those Remote Paths interpret correctly altho they are the same as Classic FTP ‘s
    as far as I can tell.

    Not a tech myself.

    I’ll do what I usually do when something gets too hard to use… trash it and find something else that works without me being forced into learning a new science.
