• I have a lot of security plugins running on my WordPress websites and the performance is getting slow (on all sites). After doing some research online & reading these forums I am wondering:

    1) which ones I should be using
    &
    2) …and more importantly how many!

My host (HostGator) is telling me that the least amount of plugins used is better for performance and the best way I can keep my security tight is to always be on the most current version of WordPress. Is this true? Thoughts?

Here is the list of plugins I am using (on every site):

    Akismet
    6Scan Security
    Antispam Bee
    Bad Behavior
    Better WP Security
    Block Bad Queries (BBQ)
    Exploit Scanner
    Jetpack by WordPress.com
    Quttera Web Malware Scanner
    Secure WordPress
    Theme Authenticity Checker (TAC)
    Ultimate Security Checker
    WebsiteDefender WordPress Security
    Wordfence Security

I was hacked last year and I got panicky and started using a lot of them. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Adam

  • After getting rid of “admin” and user #1, I use Akismet for SPAM detection, Bulletproof Security for access protection and Wordfence Security to keep an eye on things and to occasionally block an aggressive IP address. But overall, I keep current backups of everything so I can restore it all within just a few hours no matter what might happen, and even if I have to again nuke it all and start fresh.
