I uploaded an image. I wanted to update that image. I could not update that image.

Here’s what I’ve done. I delete the image from within WordPress. Oh look it didn’t delete it in the uploads folder. I delete it from FTP now too.

I go back to WordPress and add the image again, which gives it the same file name like I want. Neat. I load the image. It’s the first version of the image. I clear the cache from IE and try loading the image in 4 different browsers, each in their private browsing modes. They’re showing me the old image. I restart apache. Same image.

I go back and check the FTP. It looks like WordPress managed to upload my image correctly. In the FTP and on my disk the size matches. When I download the image from the direct link from my website however, it’s the original image with a different file size.

What the hell, man?? Is WordPress caching this in the database? This is ridiculous. Why can’t WordPress even *delete* its own images properly, much less still failing to do it when I delete it myself.

  • adding it through wordpress might have just placed it in a different folder if you have them sorted by a year/month/ folder structure which appears to be the default.

here is how i did it and got it to work:
-replace file in ftp (make sure it is at the same path as the File URL: suggests
-look up if Image at URL changed
    if no:
    -clear cache and look again
    if yes:
    -edit image
    -rotate left
    -rotate right
    -save

I hoped the editing would create new thumbnails and it did. even though these get a different name they should still be updated throughout the site, i guess.
