I have a table that works as a contact list.

The top row has pertinent details while the left column has the persons name.

    Example:

NAME B-DAY PHONE SCORE DAY MONTH YEAR STREET

    John 07/31 555-1212 7.5 Tue Jan 2003 Chester
    Dan 11/10 555-9483 7.9 Wed Mar 2001 Euclid
    Mary 08/24 555-4348 6.3 Thu Aug 2006 Oak
    Paul 03/02 555-3492 8.1 Fri Nov 2009 Canal

On mobile phones, I’ve enabled the horizontal scroll. However, I find that the horizontal scroll would work better if there were an option to have a static left column. Using this example, on the mobile phone, after the user begins scrolling horizontally, it becomes impossible to see which NAME (John, Dan, Mary or Paul) the data is referring to.

Basically, I find it’s necessary to have both a static header AND a static left column.

Is there any option that allows for a static left column while maintaining the static header?

Ugh. My apologies… All that data looked like a table before I hit “post”. Somehow it became a mess of words and numbers rather than the table it looked like. Hope the point is still there.

    Hi,

thanks for the question. I see what you mean. My suggestions for this are to try the Responsive Tables Extension from https://tablepress.org/extensions/responsive-tables/ that I already suggested in the other thread, or (which is what you describe) the FixedHeader Extension from https://tablepress.org/extensions/datatables-fixedheader/ which can be used to make the left column “freeze”.

I looked at the Responsive Tables Extension but from what I see that provides for a static left column only, and does not leave the header column static. Is this correct?

Or does Responsive Tables have an option to have two static areas – leaving both the left column and the header un-moveable?

    Hi,

yes, you are right, the Responsive tables Extension will leave the header static, but as a left column and not a top row. As all rows will also be flipped to columns, you might not actually need another static row/column, as all entries are now also visible as a column. That should usually fit on the screen if the orginal table doesn’t have too many columns.
But to be sure, I suggest that you simply try it out.

If that’s then not a satisfying option, you should take a look at the second Extension, which can fix both the left column and the top row.

    Regards,
    Tobias
