Made a mess of wp-admin folder

  • It’s a long story as to how I got to this point, but some key points are:

    1) I installed a 2nd WP subfolder for an “add-on” domain (the main domain already had WP installed)
    2) Moved the 2nd installation from a /wp/ folder up one level (I goofed in installing it where I did)
    3) Discovered I had totally wiped out all files & subfolders in the 1st installation’s wp-admin folder
    4) Did a total backup of both sites (too little, too late?)
    5) Restored the entire wp-admin contents for the 1st WP install from an OLD backup

    Now the primary site ( https://five50fitness.com/ ) shows up fine for users, but I can’t get into wp-admin / control panel

    Fatal error: Cannot redeclare win_is_writable() (previously declared in /home/five50/public_html/wp-includes/functions.php:1448) in /home/five50/public_html/wp-admin/includes/misc.php on line 557

    Any suggestions for fixing my mess?

    …as I continue trying to hack my way out of my mess…

    I’ve been backing up individual files referenced in fatal error messages, copying just those files from another “good” WP site, and trying to force my way into the Dashboard. I managed to get it to prompt me for my admin logon (although the screen wasn’t visually laid out nicely at all), and now have moved on to this:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined method WP_Screen::in_admin() in /home/five50/public_html/wp-includes/load.php on line 606

    My technique of replacing the offending individual file no longer gets me anywhere (replacing load.php with the version from the good site doesn’t get rid of a fatal error referencing load.php.

    So now I’m wondering if I should just do a full re-install of WP. But, I definitely want to backup & restore all the CONTENT and theme settings so I don’t lose all that.

    Can anyone point me at an article that will help step me through doing just that?
