Lead Source Issues

I found the following question on the salesforce.com customer community forum… I believe this is the issue you at hand… his question was never answered there.

We are using a wordpress-to-lead plugin on our new site, integrating the contact forms to create new leads in Salesforce. It’s set up to feed ‘Lead Source’, but this only displays the name of the page the form is on within the site. How can we set up ‘Lead Medium’ field to collect the referring url for analytics?

I found the article on “Setting Up Lead Tracking” via Salesforce.com… Checking it out now.

The plugin doesn’t track referrers right now, so it can’t pass this along (as the form could be on a page other than the one the user lands on, and the plugin presently only knows about the page it’s embedded in).

It could be added, but would be in a future version of the plugin.

From what I can tell from reading the link below, salesforce.com adds a script in the footer to track where the user is coming from (Google search, direct, etc) and then passes it along when the form submits.

Is there a way to utilize this existing script and pass that value to the current version of the plugin?

You could have a hidden field for that in the form, and inject whatever value that script stores into that field via jQuery. It’s workaround but should be doable until the plugin can support that script (or a non-Javascript cookie based solution).

Or, you can use the tracking script and a hardcoded web-to-lead form (generated by SalesForce’s tool) — that may be why the old form worked with the script?
