• I am no longer, as of this morning, receiving email notifications of comments or of comments needing moderation. I checked my settings and both are still checked. I haven’t added any plugins or made any other changes and I’ve been receiving them until today. I had one in my inbox this morning, but when I go to the blog it shows 8 posted today on the latest post. I had some in my moderation queue too, that I did not receive emails for. I had someone send me a test email, to make sure it wasn’t an email issue, and post a test comment. I got the the direct email but not an email to alert me of the post or to alert me that it needed moderation.

I’m using WP version 3.5.1 but did not just upgrade. I upgraded as soon as it came out and it’s been working until now.

    have you tried:
-deactivating ALL plugins (yes, all) temporarily to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s). If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try deactivating via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides. If applicible, also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder. The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old.
resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems (because the hooks remain unless plugins completely removed or some plugins stick around in cached files. So by renaming the folder, you break them and force them inactive).
    – To rule out any theme-specific issue, try switching to the unedited default theme Twenty Twelve for a moment using the WP dashboard. If you don’t have access to your admin area, you can switch to the default theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes and adding “-old” to the end of the folder name using via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

I haven’t added, changed or updated any plugins or my theme since the problem started.

Nope, even with all plugins deactivated and the theme set back to default, I do not receive notifications of new comments.

It could be a server/hosting issue. Have a look at E-mailed passwords are not being received.

Thank you, esmi, but none of that seems to apply. I do receive emails sent from my wordpress contact forms. Also, of the 18 comments on the latest post, I did receive notifications for about 3 of them. Nothing about my email has changed since I set up the blog over a year ago and I’ve been receiving the notification emails until now. They are not being sent to my junk folder, either.

I do receive emails sent from my wordpress contact forms.

That may be handled entirely differently as contact forms are not part of core WordPress functionality. Also have you asked your hosts if any of their SMTP filtering rules have changes recently?

It seems like if that was the issue, the 3 that got through would not have, but I’ll ask just to be sure.
