Custom "about us" section for index

Hi, I am a total noob with wordpress and have serched very hard to find out how to put a custom area on my index page that can contain text, such as an “about us” section. I would like to have this area editable under theme options panel using the api method as opposed to creating a theme options page, since I get the feeling that wordpress are trying to encourage people to use the api. I may have just splurted out nonsense but like I said I am a noob. My problem is that I do not know the terminology to search.

I am sure that once someone tells me the terms I should be searching then I can crack on myself. Closest I have come so far is custom meta boxes, maybe that is what I need. I do not know how to search for this tho.

I am sure this has been asked and answered may times but for the life of me I can not find a propper answer due to my search terms.
